Through such a process, the company increases the value of the resources in its possession, turning them into useful end products to improve a customer&#8217;s satisfaction.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why-it-is-important-to-understand-business-processes\"><\/span>Why it is important to understand business processes<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>You should know that the concept of business process mapping originated in the manufacturing sector, where raw materials, through a number of different stages, undergo transformations until they become the finished product. Over the years, however, the importance of creating a <strong>map<\/strong> of a company&#8217;s internal <strong>processes<\/strong> has spread to other sectors as well, partly by virtue of the fact that mapping is applicable to any type of operation, in any business environment. and &#8220;essential\/non-essential.&#8221; You should know, however, that nowadays it is usual to resort to two other classifications to describe the various types of business processes, namely, <strong>Porter&#8217;s Value Chain<\/strong> and <strong>Anthony&#8217;s Pyramid<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Porters-Chain-of-Value\"><\/span>Porter&#8217;s Chain of Value<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>Value Chain<\/strong> is a particular classification illustrated by <strong>Michael Porter<\/strong> back in 1985, which divides business processes into &#8220;<strong>primary<\/strong>&#8221; and &#8220;<strong>secondary<\/strong>,&#8221; identifying <strong>9 different types<\/strong> (5 primary and 4 secondary).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13337\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13337\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13337 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/b-plannow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Porters-Value-Chain.jpg\" alt=\"Porter's Value Chain\" width=\"1024\" height=\"724\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13337\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Porter&#8217;s Value Chain<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>primary<\/strong> business processes, according to Michael Porter, are the activities that target customers outside the company and, specifically, are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>operations<\/strong>, that is, the activities that actually enable the production of goods or services;<\/li>\n<li><strong>internal logistics<\/strong>, i.e., activities concerning the management from the outside of a company&#8217;s internal flows of goods in the direction of operations;<\/li>\n<li><strong>external logistics<\/strong>, that is, activities related to the management from within of the flow of goods in the direction of the market;<\/li>\n<li><strong>services<\/strong>, such as, for example, after-sales customer support;<\/li>\n<li><strong>marketing<\/strong> and <strong>sales<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Secondary<\/strong> business processes, on the other hand, concern the activities aimed at those within the enterprise and aimed at the realization of primary processes. In detail, they are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>supply<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>human resources<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>structural activities<\/strong>, such as, for example, those in which resources are used for development and research;<\/li>\n<li><strong>infrastructure activities<\/strong>, such as those related to business planning and accounting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Anthonys-Pyramid\"><\/span>Anthony&#8217;s Pyramid<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13331\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13331\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13331 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/b-plannow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Anthonys-Pyramid.jpg\" alt=\"Anthony's Pyramid\" width=\"1024\" height=\"724\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13331\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Anthony&#8217;s Pyramid<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Robert Newton Anthony<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Pyramid<\/strong> is another classification that divides business processes according to the <strong>objectives<\/strong> for which they are designed and the <strong>time frame<\/strong> in which they are carried out. The types of processes identified by Anthony are 3 and, in order (from the top of the pyramid to its base) are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>directional processes<\/strong>, that is, activities that involve strategic functions (such as planning) and are carried out in the medium and long term;<\/li>\n<li>the <strong>control processes<\/strong>, which are necessary for the achievement of the goal;<\/li>\n<li><strong>operational processes<\/strong> (such as production and sales), which involve short-term implementation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Business-processes-mapping\"><\/span>Business processes mapping<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The reason for mapping your startup&#8217;s business processes should be clear to you by now, but you also need to know how, specifically, to do this particular task.<\/p>\n<p>The first aspect to consider in this regard is that<strong> there is no single methodology<\/strong> for mapping business processes in order to optimize them. What is important is the objective, i.e., being able to illustrate with symbols, graphs and\/or geometric shapes the entire business process and the resources involved in it, so as to have a clear and defined overview and then be able to intervene to optimize the process, improving some specific aspects or automating and standardizing some particular procedures.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever specific methodology is chosen, it is possible to identify some <strong>basic stages of mapping<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Basic-steps-for-effective-mapping\"><\/span>Basic steps for effective mapping<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13335\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13335\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13335 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/b-plannow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Key-steps-for-effective-process-mapping.jpg\" alt=\"Key steps for effective process mapping\" width=\"1024\" height=\"724\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13335\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Key steps for effective process mapping<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The first fundamental step in proper and effective business process mapping is to <strong>identify the objective<\/strong>. In practical terms, you need to find the answer to the question: what do I want to achieve by mapping this process of my startup?<\/p>\n<p>The second phase is <strong>brainstorming<\/strong>: build the working team and brainstorm with the different team members to get as much detailed information about the process to be mapped.<\/p>\n<p>There is a third key step and it is generally referred to as &#8220;<strong>elements and timing<\/strong>&#8220;- in this step you must identify all the elements that help define the process and any points of contact with other business processes.<\/p>\n<p>The fourth stage of mapping is <strong>sequence<\/strong>: you have to order the various activities and tasks sequentially.<\/p>\n<p>In the fifth phase, <strong>symbols<\/strong> make their entrance, useful for describing the business process as it actually is (and, mind you, not as you would like it to be). Geometric symbols and lines serve to uniquely describe the various elements: ovals, for example, represent the beginning and end of a process while rectangles indicate the activities to be performed.<\/p>\n<p>Once the preliminary map is constructed, it is time for <strong>analysis<\/strong>, which must consider inefficiencies and inconsistencies, both operationally and communicatively.<\/p>\n<p>Analysis is followed by <strong>monitoring<\/strong>: at this stage you need to make the changes you think are necessary and test them so that they can eventually be made permanent.<\/p>\n<p>The last key step in effective business process mapping is <strong>finalization<\/strong>: looking at the final map, consider whether to automate or standardize certain activities.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Use-of-digitization-and-automation\"><\/span>Use of digitization and automation<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>As just pointed out, business process mapping allows you to understand what activities you can automate or standardize and, as a result, also gives you the guidance you need to <strong>choose the best management software(s)<\/strong> for your startup.<\/p>\n<p>Software of this type allows you to reduce errors due to human action, speed up time and keep track of workflows, tasks and deadlines, thus ensuring benefits on other future business processes as well.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Process-measurement-with-KPIs\"><\/span>Process measurement with KPIs<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Mapping business processes is useless if you do not measure your startup&#8217;s performance. <strong>Measurement<\/strong>, of course, must be done based on precise <strong>performance indicators<\/strong> or <a href=\"https:\/\/b-plannow.com\/en\/business-kpis-the-essential-guide\/\">business KPIs<\/a> and tracking systems. But how to choose them? The next few lines will serve to shed light on this very issue.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Establish-performance-indicators\"><\/span>Establish performance indicators<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Performance indicators, as just mentioned, are used to monitor the performance of various business processes and, based on this, correct any errors and better plan future activities.<\/p>\n<p>On a general level, KPIs should be <strong>accessible<\/strong>, <strong>certain<\/strong> and <strong>easy to interpret<\/strong>, as well as <strong>monitored on a short-term cadence<\/strong>. To avoid conflicts in interpretation, moreover, it would be best to entrust their monitoring to a precise figure.<\/p>\n<p>That said, to properly establish performance indicators you must also (and especially) refer to your startup&#8217;s precise characteristics, key variables and critical factors or areas.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Business-process-optimization\"><\/span>Business process optimization<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Business process <strong>optimization<\/strong> is another key step, ideally closing the circle of mapping.
